A mate of mine has been using an engine oil supplied by a main dealer for his 04 galaxy.

I recently got to look at the can - out of curiosity (well it was just left lying around) and put it back after deciding it was'nt suitable for topping up my galaxy - It did'nt specify "PD engine".

Until I get to see it again tonight, the only thing I can recall about it is that it claims to be for all diesel engines and that it is 5w40

I only discovered it was being used for my mates galaxy about an hour ago (his family have other fords)

I mistakenly made a similar error with my last galaxy - and it started to become very oil thirsty

Guess what? his galaxy is now using bucket loads of oil - and his garage says he must have a bad leak from the sump plug.

Does this sound like lasting damage - or will an oil/filter change restore things to normal?

My VW T5 is on long servicable interval settings, it's eats oil on a regular basis about a litre every 10/12K :D apparently this is to be expected :D I'm told it's a way of getting a change of oil or at least fresh oil inbetween services  not that I care as I dont pay for the oil :D

Yeah, but be fair....my bro' has a passat PD 130 and it drinks oil like Ollie Reed drank Scotch!

The trade know that they're all thirsty (until some muppet jumps and says in his best Arthur Pewty voice 'mine doesn't use a drop'), it's not dangerous, just factor it in as a running cost (put some in with each tankful of fuel  ). Anyway each time you top it up you're refreshing the oil a significant amount - should make the engine last longer. :D

BTW my T4 2.4 Diesel only goes halfway down between changes and it's done 170,000 miles. No Turbo see!

More info now:

It's ford formula S/SD 5w-40.... Synthetic technology motor oil...

VW505-01 etc, includes engines with pump nozzle technology etc...

So is that ok then? just accept that it's now a very thirsty engine oil consumer that barely used a drop prior to using that oil?

Hmmm......interesting........is a spec printed on a can any guarantee of quality or suitability?

I litre every 10,000 to 12,000 miles is very low consumption indeed.

I think it is likely a typo if it was a litre every 1000 miles it would be eating oil, but on some engines even that is condsidered normal.

From a reputable manufactures and supplier I guess so, but the price of high quality oils these days I guess it won't be long before the counterfeiters are doing their worst.

For the record, my PD engine consumes Castrol TXT 505.01 at the rate of around 4000 - 5000 miles per litre, which I reckon is perfectly acceptable.

As far as industrial turbocharged diesel engines are concerned, an oil consumption of up to 0.2% of fuel consumed is considered good, and 0.1% is considered to be excellent. On a PD engine, 0.2% of fuel used would be around 4400 miles per litre.

All engines consume oil, but they also put impurities into the oil. For example, my wife's Mercedes 190D never requires topping up between oil changes (every 6000 miles) - this is because the rate of consumption is roughly equal to the rate of contamination. The Alhambra does require topping up between oil changes because the rate of consumption is slightly higher, the rate of contamination is lower (it takes far longer for the oil to turn black in the Alhambra than in the Merc) and the period between oil changes is longer. In addition, the Merc is used for more short trips, and this tends to increase the rate of contamination.

Most manufacturers (even the Japanese) quote a maximum oil consumption of 1000 miles per litre, and as engines get cleaner, sumps get smaller and oil change intervals get longer, it is becoming more common for top-ups to be required between oil changes.

The car accessory shop in Frimley High Street, next to the HSBC bank; used to be called Frimley Motors IIRC, but now under new-ish younger management. I think the 2 old boys who used to work there sold up and retired.
